Villa Healing Center accepts Aetna for adult residential mental health treatment. Your Aetna plan covers residential mental health under the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. We confirm the specifics of your individual plan during verification, which typically takes about 15 minutes by phone.
Aetna is one of the largest commercial health insurance carriers in the United States, with more than 22 million members. Aetna became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CVS Health in November 2018 following the major acquisition. Unlike several other major carriers, Aetna administers mental health and substance use disorder benefits internally through Aetna Behavioral Health rather than carving those benefits out to a third-party administrator. This distinction matters because mental health authorizations and claims for Aetna members flow through Aetna directly rather than through a separate behavioral health company.
When Villa Healing’s admissions team verifies your Aetna benefits, they confirm a single contract pathway that applies to both medical and behavioral health coverage, what your plan’s prior authorization process looks like, and what your specific plan’s coverage specifics is for residential mental health treatment. This gives you an accurate picture of what your coverage will look like before you commit to admission.
Aetna is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which rates health plans on access to care, member satisfaction, prevention, and treatment effectiveness. Aetna plans are also rated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), whose complaint index data is publicly available through state insurance departments. In California, Aetna Health of California Inc. and Aetna Life Insurance Company are regulated by the California Department of Insurance.
Every Aetna plan has its own coverage specifics for residential mental health treatment. Verification confirms what your plan covers for your individual policy. Your benefits summary explains how your plan covers residential mental health, identifies any plan-specific notes, and confirms what to expect before admission.
Aetna plans cover residential mental health treatment at Villa Healing, and our admissions team walks you through your plan’s specifics during verification. Most commercial PPO plans provide coverage at residential mental health facilities at varying levels depending on the plan’s preferred provider network. Verification clarifies exactly what your plan will pay before you commit to admission.
Out-of-state Aetna members traveling to California for residential care follow the same verification process. Plans purchased in other states may have different coverage specificss and provider networks than California plans. Verification confirms the specifics of your individual policy regardless of which state you live in.
Most Aetna commercial plans cover residential mental health treatment when medically necessary, with prior authorization. Coverage is governed by the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA), which requires mental health and substance use disorder benefits at parity with medical and surgical benefits. Coverage typically includes room and board, individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric medication management, family therapy when clinically appropriate, and integrative wellness programming delivered as part of residential care.
Aetna plan types vary in their coverage specifics. Aetna Choice POS and Open Access PPO plans typically allow access to a broader range of providers. Aetna HMO plans typically require referrals from a primary care provider. Aetna’s small group plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and employer-sponsored coverage are active in California, though Aetna exited the California individual exchange market in 2017 and does not currently offer plans through Covered California. The specific coverage specifics for your plan, including specific coverage details, is confirmed during the verification process.
Villa Healing provides adult residential mental health treatment only. We do not provide medical detoxification, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), standard outpatient therapy, or services for patients under 18. If your verification identifies a need for one of these levels of care, we coordinate referral to a partner provider as part of the admissions conversation.
Aetna requires prior authorization for residential mental health treatment on most commercial plans. Villa Healing’s admissions and clinical teams handle the prior authorization request with Aetna on your behalf. Initial authorizations for residential mental health treatment typically run 7 to 14 days, with continued-stay reviews every 5 to 7 days based on medical necessity.
Medical necessity for residential mental health treatment under Aetna is typically established by clinical assessment showing that lower levels of care (outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization) are not clinically appropriate or have been unsuccessful. Aetna Behavioral Health applies medical necessity criteria consistent with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria and the LOCUS or CASII level-of-care criteria for mental health. Villa Healing’s clinical team documents medical necessity during intake and at each continued-stay review. Our admissions and clinical teams handle all continued-stay reviews throughout your treatment, including any appeals if needed.
Villa Healing Center is located at 23033 Ostronic Drive, Woodland Hills, California 91367, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. Adult patients with Aetna from across California and other states travel to our facility for residential mental health treatment. The California Department of Insurance regulates Aetna Health of California Inc. and Aetna Life Insurance Company in California. Their consumer assistance line at (800) 927-4357 can help with coverage disputes that cannot be resolved with Aetna directly.
Out-of-state Aetna members follow the same verification process. CVS Health’s nationwide footprint (MinuteClinic locations, CVS Caremark pharmacy benefit management) is administratively separate from Aetna’s medical and behavioral health networks, but Aetna members may have related benefits worth confirming during verification.
