Villa Healing Center works with Florida Blue members who choose to leave the state for residential mental health treatment. Whether your plan pays for care in California depends almost entirely on which Florida Blue product you have, and we find that out before you make any arrangements.
Florida Blue is the Blue Cross Blue Shield company for the state of Florida. It is based in Jacksonville and belongs to GuideWell, a not-for-profit parent organization. It is the largest health insurer in the state, covering people through employers, the federal marketplace and the State of Florida employee plan.
Florida Blue’s product names tell us a great deal.
If your card says BlueOptions, there is a good chance we can help. If it says myBlue or BlueCare, coverage here is unlikely, and we will tell you so quickly.
Florida has no state-run exchange, so residents buy individual coverage on HealthCare.gov. More Floridians are enrolled this way than residents of any other state, and Florida Blue is a leading choice.
Many of the lowest-priced marketplace options are myBlue HMO plans. They work well for care at home but rarely for treatment elsewhere. If you bought your plan on HealthCare.gov, check whether the name includes BlueOptions or myBlue before you call. It will save you time.

Florida Blue does not review mental health treatment itself. It uses Lucet, a behavioral health company previously known as New Directions. Lucet’s number is usually on the back of your card.
Lucet decides whether a residential stay is approved and for how long. Our clinicians send Lucet your assessment and keep it updated during treatment.
Many Florida families first meet the mental health system through the Baker Act, the state law that allows an involuntary examination of up to 72 hours when someone may be a danger to themselves or others.
A Baker Act hold is short and focused on immediate safety. It often ends with a discharge and a list of referrals, leaving the person and the family asking what comes next.
Residential treatment is a different kind of care. It is voluntary, it lasts weeks instead of days, and its purpose is recovery, not crisis management. Villa Healing Center is not a hospital and does not accept involuntary admissions. We can speak with hospital discharge planners while a loved one is still being evaluated.
Florida has seen its share of treatment marketing abuses, and the state now has strict laws against paying for patient referrals. Whatever program you consider, these questions are worth asking:
