Grief Counseling and Therapy for Adults

For grief that has stopped moving: daily grief therapy inside residential mental health treatment, for adults with prolonged grief disorder, complicated grief, or a loss that has turned into depression. Private six-bed home, physician-led team.

Grief is not an illness, and most grieving people need time, support, and community rather than treatment. Villa Healing Center exists for the grief that stops following that path: the loss that a year later still organizes every day, the mourning that has hardened into depression, the bereavement being managed with a bottle. When grief becomes clinical, it deserves clinical care, and that is what we provide: daily grief counseling with licensed clinicians, inside a residential program, with most major commercial PPO plans accepted.

Signs Grief Has Become Something More

Healthy grief hurts and moves; clinical grief hurts and stays. The signs it has stopped moving: months or years on, the loss still dominates most days, the person’s room or belongings are frozen in place, life has narrowed to work and survival, joy anywhere feels like betrayal of the person who died, sleep and appetite never recovered, and the people around you have quietly stopped asking how you are. Delayed grief shows up too, a loss that seemed handled until it arrived all at once years later, and cumulative grief, the losses that stacked up faster than anyone could mourn them. None of this means you are grieving wrong. It means the grief may have become a condition, and conditions respond to treatment.

Prolonged Grief Disorder: When Grief Doesn't Resolve

Prolonged grief disorder was added to the DSM-5-TR in 2022, and its recognition matters because it names what many mourners have long been told was a personal failing. The diagnosis describes grief that, a year or more after the loss, still brings intense yearning or preoccupation with the person who died nearly every day, along with identity disruption, disbelief, avoidance of reminders, emotional numbness, and an inability to re-enter life. Roughly, ordinary grief softens with time even when it never disappears; prolonged grief disorder does not soften, and time alone does not treat it. What does: prolonged grief disorder treatment built on grief-focused therapy, the structured work that helps the mind do the processing it has been unable to do on its own, delivered here daily rather than weekly, alongside treatment of the depression and anxiety that usually grow around a stalled grief. If you have been wondering why everyone else seems able to move and you cannot, this diagnosis, not weakness, is often the answer.

Complicated Grief Treatment

Clinicians used the term complicated grief for years before prolonged grief disorder was formalized, and families still search for it; both describe grief that has become entangled and stuck. Complicated grief therapy at Villa Healing untangles what keeps it stuck: guilt and unfinished business with the person who died, anger at how they died, and especially traumatic grief, when the loss was sudden, violent, or witnessed, and the trauma blocks the mourning, because the mind cannot grieve a memory it cannot safely touch. In those cases the work is sequenced with our trauma program: the traumatic imagery is processed first, often with EMDR therapy, and the grieving becomes possible after. Where the loss has grown into a full depression, treatment runs through our depression program under the same roof and the same plan, and where alcohol or medication has become the coping method, dual diagnosis treatment addresses both together.

A Grief Retreat With a Clinical Program Inside It

Many people searching for a grief retreat in California are looking for the same thing: somewhere quiet to fall apart safely, away from the house full of reminders and the calendar full of obligations. Our six-bed residence is that place, with something a retreat alone cannot offer: licensed grief therapists who see you every day, structure that gently rebuilds eating, sleeping, and moving, others in the house who understand loss without explanation, and a clinical team treating what the grief has become. Bereavement counseling here is not a weekly appointment you drive home from alone; it is woven through daily individual therapy, group work, and evenings that do not have to be survived by yourself. The stay is voluntary, most PPO plans cover it with prior authorization, and the day-to-day structure lives on our residential treatment program page.

Therapies Used in Grief Treatment

Grief-focused therapy adapts evidence-based methods to loss: CBT addresses the guilt, self-blame, and frozen beliefs that keep mourning stuck, and structured grief work helps you revisit the loss at a tolerable pace, tell its story, and rebuild a connection to the person that allows life to continue, which is the goal, not forgetting. DBT skills steady the waves of emotion that make grief feel dangerous. EMDR therapy processes traumatic loss imagery. Psychiatric medication management is offered when depression or sleep collapse warrants it, never as a way to medicate mourning itself. Family therapy helps when a household is grieving in incompatible ways, and yoga, mindfulness, and quiet through holistic wellness give the body its part of the mourning.

Insurance Coverage for Grief Treatment

When grief has become a diagnosable condition, prolonged grief disorder, major depression, PTSD, residential treatment is covered by most major commercial PPO plans, including Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Shield of California, and TRICARE, with prior authorization our team manages. Verification takes about 15 minutes, and you will have the expected cost in writing before anyone asks you to decide anything. If your plan is out-of-network, single-case agreements and self-pay arrangements can usually bridge it.

Grief Counseling in Woodland Hills, Serving Los Angeles

Villa Healing provides grief counseling in Woodland Hills from our residence at 23033 Ostronic Drive in the San Fernando Valley, minutes from the 101 and reachable from the 405, and serves adults seeking grief counseling in Los Angeles and grief therapy across California. Los Angeles has good community grief resources, support circles, hospice bereavement programs, and grief counseling centers, and for most mourners those are the right first door. We sit behind that door, for the rare cases those resources are not built to hold: a residential-level program for grief that has become a clinical condition. Adults come to us from across LA County and travel from throughout California, and our team handles admission timing, travel, and keeping family close to the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you run grief support groups I can attend weekly?

No. We are a residential program, not a community grief center. Free or low-cost weekly grief support groups are offered by hospice bereavement programs, community grief centers, houses of worship, and many therapists across Los Angeles, and for most grieving people they are exactly the right support. We are for grief that has gone past what weekly support can hold.

How do I know if my grief is "bad enough" for treatment?

Wrong question, honestly; grief does not have to qualify. The clinical markers are about function and time: a year or more on, is the loss still running most days, has life narrowed to survival, has depression, drinking, or hopelessness moved in? If you are unsure, one confidential call gets you an honest read, including "you are grieving normally and do not need us," which we say often.

Is grief a mental illness now? I heard it was added to the DSM.

Grief itself, no. What the DSM-5-TR added in 2022 is prolonged grief disorder, a specific pattern where grief remains at full intensity and blocks functioning a year or more after the loss. Recognizing it as a disorder is what makes real treatment, and insurance coverage for it, possible.

Isn't going away to a program just avoiding my grief?

The opposite, usually. Staying home with the reminders while barely surviving is what tends to freeze grief; treatment is where you finally face it with support, on purpose, at a pace you can tolerate. And the goal of grief therapy is not to detach from the person you lost; it is to carry them differently, so their memory stops costing you your life.

How soon after a loss should someone consider this?

For ordinary grief, there is no clock and no rush; lean on your people and community support first. Come to us sooner if the loss was traumatic, if you cannot eat, sleep, or function at all, if you are using alcohol or pills to get through, or if you are having thoughts of joining the person who died; that last one deserves a call today, to 988 first if the thoughts are active, then to us.

You Don't Have to Grieve Like This Forever

If your grief has stopped moving, that is not a verdict on your love or your strength; it is a treatable condition wearing the shape of one. One confidential call gets you an honest read on which one you are carrying, and if treatment is the answer, we will have your coverage and an admission date sorted before the week is out. The line is open 24/7.
