Residential Inpatient Mental Health Treatment Program

A licensed residential mental health facility where adults live on-site, work with licensed clinicians every day, and follow one written treatment plan. DHCS-certified, CDSS-licensed, and limited to six clients at a time.

Residential mental health treatment is for the moment when weekly therapy is not enough and a psychiatric hospital is more than you need. At Villa Healing Center, adults live in a private six-bed home with clinical staff present 24 hours a day, daily individual therapy, group work, psychiatric medication management, and integrative wellness, all under one plan reviewed throughout the stay. Treatment is voluntary, the doors are not locked, and most major commercial PPO plans are accepted.

What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment is full-time mental health care delivered where you live during treatment. Instead of visiting a therapist for an hour a week, you move into a live-in mental health facility for several weeks, with round-the-clock clinical support, structured daily programming, and a treatment team that adjusts the plan as you progress. Residential mental health treatment centers sit between outpatient therapy and hospital care: more intensive than weekly sessions, less restrictive than a psychiatric ward.

What is residential mental health treatment in practice? Daily individual therapy, clinician-led groups, psychiatric medication visits, family sessions when appropriate, meals and living space in a home rather than a facility corridor, and a written continuing-care plan before discharge. If weekly sessions are working for you, keep them; residential exists for when they are not. Our guide to outpatient and residential levels of care covers how clinicians decide.

Who Our Residential Program Serves

Our adult mental health residential treatment program serves people 18 and over whose symptoms need daily clinical attention but not hospitalization. The most common situations: therapy and medication have not produced improvement, symptoms have made work or home life unmanageable, the home environment cannot support stabilization, or the adult is stepping down from psychiatric hospitalization and going straight home feels unsafe. Every admission starts with a clinical assessment by a licensed clinician, including a structured suicide risk screening, and if residential is not the right level we say so and point you to what is.

We are a mental-health-first program. Co-occurring substance use is treated within dual diagnosis care, but we do not provide primary substance use disorder treatment.

Inpatient vs. Residential Treatment: What's the Difference?

Both provide 24-hour care. Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization is short-term crisis stabilization in a hospital unit, usually 3 to 14 days, for acute emergencies. Residential psychiatric treatment is the level after or instead of that: a home setting, stays of several weeks, and sustained daily therapeutic work for adults stable enough to engage in it. Many adults move through both, hospital first, residential second.

What to Expect in Our Residential Treatment Program

Treatment begins with the intake assessment, which sets the diagnosis, goals, and your written plan. A typical week in our residential mental health program includes daily individual therapy, multiple sessions of group therapy including dedicated skills groups, family therapy when clinically appropriate, psychiatric medication management, and holistic wellness such as yoga, acupuncture, and mindfulness. Length of stay follows clinical response, not a calendar; most adults stay several weeks, then transition out with a continuing-care plan the team builds before discharge.

Therapies and Modalities in the Residential Program

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy anchors treatment for depression and anxiety. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, taught through individual work and skills groups, supports adults with emotional dysregulation, self-harm urges, or chronic suicidal thoughts. EMDR therapy is delivered by trained clinicians when trauma is part of the clinical picture. A psychiatric prescriber manages medication within the same plan. Modalities are matched to your diagnosis at assessment, not assigned by template.

Adult Residential Treatment in a Private Six-Bed Home

Villa Healing is a residential treatment center for adults, ages 18 and over, and it is deliberately small. Six beds means the clinical team knows every client, individual therapy happens daily instead of when the schedule allows, and the house feels like a home: private and shared bedrooms, quiet outdoor space, and chef-prepared meals. Families comparing luxury mental health treatment centers often choose us for what the size makes possible rather than the amenities alone. Treatment here is voluntary; you live in a home, not on a ward.

Paying for Residential Treatment

Does insurance cover residential mental health treatment? In most cases, yes. Most major commercial PPO plans cover this level of care with prior authorization, which our team handles, and the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires plans that cover mental health to do so on terms no more restrictive than medical coverage. Benefits are verified in about 15 minutes and your expected out-of-pocket cost reaches you in writing before you commit. Out-of-network plans can work through single-case agreements, and self-pay options are available.

Residential Mental Health Care in Woodland Hills and the San Fernando Valley

Villa Healing Center is at 23033 Ostronic Drive, Woodland Hills, California 91367, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. Our residential facility is accessible from the 101 and 405 Freeways.

Los Angeles County has substantial documented mental health need. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the California Department of Public Health publish ongoing mental health surveillance data showing that a meaningful portion of adults in the county experience serious mental illness, and that access to residential mental health care is limited relative to need. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration data documents similar patterns across California.

Our residential facility serves adults across the San Fernando Valley, including Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Encino, Calabasas, West Hills, Canoga Park, and Agoura Hills, as well as adults traveling from across Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and the broader Southern California region. Many adults who complete residential treatment with us continue with therapy and psychiatric medication management at a referring provider or community mental health clinician for step-down continuation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does residential mental health treatment cost?

With in-network commercial PPO coverage, your cost is your plan's deductible and coinsurance, which we confirm and put in writing before admission. Without insurance, we offer self-pay rates and flexible arrangements. Either way, you know the number before you decide anything; verification takes about 15 minutes.

How long does residential treatment last?

Length of stay is set by clinical recommendation and response to treatment, not a fixed calendar. Most adults stay several weeks, then step down to ongoing care with a written continuing-care plan.

Do you offer long-term residential care?

No. We are certified as a transitional residential program, built for stays of several weeks. If your situation calls for months of residential care, we will say so at assessment and help you find a long-term program rather than admit someone we cannot serve well.

Is treatment voluntary? Are the doors locked?

Yes, and no. Admission is voluntary, the residence is unlocked, and clients participate in treatment by choice. Adults who need locked-unit monitoring for acute safety belong in inpatient hospitalization first; once it is safe, we coordinate admission with the hospital so residential becomes the next step.

Do you treat teens or adolescents?

No. We are licensed as an adult residential facility and serve ages 18 and over only. For adolescent residential care, ask your pediatrician for a referral or search the Psychology Today directory by age range.

Can family visit or join treatment?

Yes. Family contact is part of standard care when the client consents, family therapy is scheduled when clinically appropriate, and out-of-area families join by phone and scheduled sessions.
